Po 13 godzinach bezpośredniego lotu z Rzymu papież Franciszek przybył w środę do Panamy na 34. Światowe Dni Młodzieży. Na lotnisko w stolicy kraju przybył powitać papieża prezydent Juan Carlos Varela, a także nuncjusz apostolski arcybiskup Mirosław Adamczyk.
Na środę nie zapowiedziano żadnych wydarzeń z udziałem Franciszka, który będzie odpoczywać po podróży. Papież prosto z lotniska uda się do nuncjatury apostolskiej, która będzie jego siedzibą w czasie pobytu w Panamie do niedzieli.
Oficjalna ceremonia powitania papieża odbędzie się w czwartek rano przed pałacem prezydenckim. Po południu Franciszek przywita się z uczestnikami Światowych Dni Młodzieży, którzy przybyli z ponad 150 krajów. Wśród ponad 200 tysięcy pielgrzymów jest ok. 3500 Polaków; także ci, którzy przypłynęli żaglowcem Dar Młodzieży, opływającym świat w Rejsie Niepodległości.
Środa jest polskim świętem na ŚDM. Młodzi polscy pielgrzymi wraz z kapłanami i biskupami spotkają się o godzinie 18 miejscowego czasu (o północy w Polsce) na mszy, której przewodniczyć będzie prymas Polski arcybiskup Wojciech Polak. Po mszy odbędzie się koncert polskich artystów. Wystąpią Olga Szomańska, Darek Malejonek, Marcin Wyrostek, Marcin Januszkiewicz oraz Siewcy Lednicy, a także gość specjalny z USA – Stan Fortuna.
Wizyta w Panamie to 26. zagraniczna pielgrzymka papieża od początku pontyfikatu. Na pokładzie samolotu podczas nieformalnych rozmów z dziennikarzami Franciszek potwierdził, że w listopadzie pojedzie do Japonii.
