Na zawsze nasz kapitan
Ostatnie pożegnanie odbyło się w historycznej bazylice Świętego Krzyża. W pogrzebie wzięli udział koledzy z drużyny, a także zawodnicy z innych klubów. Hołd piłkarzowi oddało całe miasto. W witrynach sklepów i w oknach prywatnych domów ustawiono jego portrety. Kibice trzymali w rękach szaliki Fiorentiny i sztandary w jej barwach. Powiewał wielki transparent z napisem: „Na zawsze nasz kapitan”.

Pomagał bez rozgłosu
Kardynał podkreślił, że życie piłkarza „przerwała tajemnicza choroba, co każe pamiętać o nieuchronności losu i konieczności wzięcia odpowiedzialności za życie innych, szczególnie słabych i odrzuconych”. W tym kontekście kaznodzieja przypomniał, że dopiero w ostatnich dniach wszyscy dowiedzieli się o tym, że Astori po treningach i meczach bez rozgłosu odwiedzał florencki szpital, gdzie pomagał chorym dzieciom. Wspierał też szpitale w krajach ubogich.

Pełen człowieczeństwa
Arcybiskup Florencji przypomniał ponadto budujące świadectwo, jakie dają o zmarłym piłkarzu jego młodsi koledzy z drużyny, których serdecznie wspierał i wspomagał. „Był wrażliwym i pełnym człowieczeństwa sportowcem w świecie, który tworzy sobie idoli i patrzy na ludzi tylko przez pryzmat pieniądza” – zaznaczył mówca.

31-letni Astori został znaleziony martwy w niedzielę, w pokoju hotelowym w Udine, gdzie zespół Fiorentiny przebywał przed meczem Serie A (I ligi) z Udinese. Prokurator uznał, że śmierć nastąpiła z przyczyn naturalnych, a autopsja wykazała, że powodem były problemy z sercem. Nieoczekiwany zgon Astoriego okrył żałobą całe piłkarskie Włochy. Wszystkie niedzielne mecze Serie A zostały odwołane.
